At the end of the Great War, two young men find themselves far from home, with everything to gain or everything to lose . . . Charismatic womaniser Jack Bryant has the world at his feet, but when trouble catches up with him he's forced to flee Penzance. Honest Ned Sinclair is on a family adventure in Rangoon when he is dealt a bitter blow. With all the odds against him, he risks his life in a desperate bid to escape. Both men hope to start their lives anew, seeking their fortune in India's fields of gold. Their paths collide in the colourful city of Bangalore, where they form a friendship like no other. In the years that follow, they remain inextricably bound by a dark secret, while their love for the same woman threatens to tear them apart. From the windswept clifftops of the Cornish coast to the goldmines of southern India, this is a page-turning story of high adventure, devastating tragedy and enduring love.

I thought Fiona McIntosh's first foray into historical fiction was a great read; two strong, male protagonists, exotic locations, secrets, deception, love triangle. She really covered all bases. And then the icing on the cake was in the author's note at the end, where she reveals that she borrowed liberally from her own family history for the major characters and some of the key plot points. Wow! My only criticism is that it all got a bit too melodramatic towards the end, but it wasn't enough to spoil my enjoyment.

Fields Of Gold edition by Fiona McIntosh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this intriguing love story woven into the history of India. As usual with Fiona's books, it was wonderfully written and hard to put down.
I have just discover Fiona McIntosh a fellow South Australian and find that with this book and the others that I have bought I can not put them down, her places and people are fascinating
This was a truly fantastic story. The detailed descriptions, intriguing storyline and fascinating characters made this a book which was very hard to put down. So good in fact, I didn't want it to end.
Good from start to finish disappointed it finished as I was enjoying reading it so much story line was captivating
I have never read a book set in India before and was fascinated to imagine life there with all the colour with which McIntosh paints. The excellent story line was even more believable when I learnt that it was based on the lives of some of her forefathers.
A good read.
Like all Fiona McIntosh's books, this is a good read. Some of the story takes place in Wales, but most of it is in Bangalore and the Kolar Gold Fields. It is a very interesting insight into life in the Gold Fields and the people who live there and of course the love story that threads its way through it all. I enjoyed this very much and can recommend it well
whilst quite a different flavour from her other novel's ( The Lavender Keeper, The French Promise, The Tailor's Girl) this is a great book full of complex characters and stories. Similar to novels such as The Great Gatsby, not every character is likeable, nor are they meant to be, and like Gatsby, this does not in any way detract from the tight writing and plot or the amazing historical back drop she weaves. These stories say a lot about men, women and the relationships that characterise many of our lives. A great book!
